Well, here we go . . . my first post in my first blog. I
figured writing a blog would be a great way to kill a few birds with one stone:
(1) to memorialize my experiences as a Chicago bankruptcy lawyer in Chicago’s
bankruptcy court, (2) to share my experiences with others, (3) to hopefully get
some input from others, and (4) to just do a bit more writing. Here’s a brief
intro.
I got my first taste of bankruptcy law in law school after
taking the evening bankruptcy law course. As is probably the case with BK
courses in most law schools around the country, this one was generally centered
on Chapter 11. We did spend a couple of weeks on Chapter 7, but hardly any
class time at all was dedicated to Chapter 13 (my favorite). Anyways, always
concerned about the human condition (we started with Chapter 7) I was
immediately drawn in and found my calling. There’s nothing like helping out the
little guy – I suppose I was always a consumer lawyer at heart. Also of note, I
took that law school bankruptcy course post BAPCPA. So as far as I’m concerned,
the means test was always part of the Bankruptcy Code. I suppose I lucked out
by not having had to go through the BAPCPA transition.
Shortly thereafter, while still in law school, I started
working for a solo bankruptcy lawyer. This is where I confirmed my calling. With
the Bankruptcy Code and real life issues competing for my attention it became
more and more difficult to find the time to read those administrative law SCOTUS
opinions. Working for that attorney was invaluable, I was exposed to the entire
consumer bankruptcy practice experience – got paid for it too – and found my bankruptcy
mentors.
These days I’m running my own law firm where I concentrate
my practice in bankruptcy law and estate planning. And, I just started this
blog. I’m hoping to post here on a regular basis for many years to come and
will make a true effort to do so. I don’t have a general theme in mind; I’ll
just see what develops naturally. All I know is that I’m passionate about
bankruptcy law and want this blog to become a resource to potential debtors and
to the Chicago bankruptcy bar.
So please chime in if you have two cents to add and thanks for reading.
